How to Rank in the Google Map Pack (Local Business Guide for 2026)

When someone searches for a local service — "plumber near me," "auto body shop in Wakefield," "pool builder near me" — Google shows three businesses in a box at the top of the results, with a map above them. That box is called the Map Pack, and it is the most valuable real estate in local search.
Those three businesses get the overwhelming majority of the calls. Everyone ranked below the Map Pack is fighting over the leftovers. If you own a local business and you are not in those top three, you are invisible to most of the people searching for exactly what you do.
Here is how the Map Pack actually works, and what it takes to get in.

What the Map Pack Is and Why It Matters
The Map Pack — also called the Local Pack — is the set of three local business listings Google displays at the top of search results for local-intent queries. Each listing shows the business name, star rating, number of reviews, category, hours, and buttons to call or get directions.
It matters for one simple reason: it sits above the regular website results, and it is where most local clicks go. Studies of local search consistently show the Map Pack capturing the majority of clicks for "near me" and local service searches. For a service business, ranking in the Map Pack is often more valuable than ranking number one in the regular website results below it.
The Three Factors Google Uses to Rank the Map Pack
Google has been clear that local ranking comes down to three core factors.
Relevance. How well your business matches what the person searched. This is driven by your Google Business Profile categories, services, and the content on your website. If someone searches "pool resurfacing" and your profile and site never mention resurfacing, Google has no reason to show you.
Distance. How close your business is to the searcher or the location they searched. You can't move your business, but you can target the areas you serve through location pages and proper service area settings.
Prominence. How well-known and trusted your business is. This is driven by your review quantity and quality, the consistency of your business information across the web, your website's authority, and overall online activity.
You can't control distance much, but relevance and prominence are entirely within your control — and that's where the work happens.
What Actually Gets You Into the Map Pack
A fully optimized Google Business Profile. This is the foundation. Complete every field — categories, services with descriptions, hours, service areas, attributes, and a keyword-rich business description. Add real photos regularly. Post updates weekly. An incomplete profile will never outrank a complete one, all else being equal.
Consistent reviews. Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals. It's not just the total count — it's the recency and the rate. A business getting a steady stream of new reviews signals to Google that it's active and trusted. Ask every satisfied customer for a review, and respond to every one you receive.
Consistent business information across the web. Your business name, address, and phone number need to be identical everywhere they appear — Google, Yelp, Bing, BBB, Angi, industry directories, and your own website. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your ranking. This consistency is called your citations, and cleaning them up is one of the highest-impact things most local businesses never do.
A website built to rank. Your Google Business Profile and your website work together. A fast, mobile-friendly website with dedicated service pages and location pages reinforces your relevance and feeds your prominence. Businesses with strong websites consistently outrank those relying on a profile alone.
Local content and location pages. If you serve multiple towns, you need a page for each one. A pool company serving five suburbs needs five location pages, each targeting that area. This is how you expand the range of searches where Google considers you relevant.
Why Most Local Businesses Never Rank
The pattern we see constantly is the same. A great local business — excellent work, loyal customers, years of experience — is buried below competitors who do worse work but show up first. Why? Their profile is half-filled-out. Their reviews trickle in once a year. Their business information is inconsistent across the web. Their website was built years ago and was never structured to rank. They've been coasting on referrals and word of mouth, and they never built the online presence that captures the customers who don't come from a referral.
The fix is rarely about doing more work — it's about doing the specific things Google rewards, consistently, over a few months.
